چکیده

The generation of regular and irregular past tense verbs has long been a testing ground for different models of inflection in the mental lexicon. According to the dual-system view, regular forms are generated by a rule and irregular forms are retrieved from memory. The single-system view postulates a single integrated system for all forms. Behavioral studies examined a variety of languages, but neuroimaging studies still rely almost exclusively on English and German data. We used Russian, a language with a much more complex verb class system. To avoid problems identified in earlier studies, we randomly mixed different tasks (inflecting nonce and real verbs and nouns of different types) and compiled large sets of stimuli matched for frequency and phonological complexity. Unlike most previously obtained results, our findings are more readily compatible with the single-system approach. Observed activation patterns are best explained by the difference in processing load between experimental tasks.

Detection of the brain response during a cognitive task using perfusion-based event-related functional MRI.

Event-related (ER) fMRI has evoked great interest due to the ability to depict the dynamic features of human brain function during various cognitive tasks. Thus far, all cognitive ER-fMRI studies have been based on blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) contrast techniques. Compared with BOLD-based fMRI techniques, perfusion-based fMRI is able to localize the region of neuronal activity more ...

Processing Russian inflectional morphology: a PET study of verb generation

For many years, acquisition of verbal morphology has been an issue of much debate within linguistic theory, research on first and second language acquisition, mental grammar representation, and cognitive processing. The proponents of the Dual Mechanism account claim that regularly inflected forms are computed by a ruleprocessing system, while morphologically irregular forms are processed in ass...

Nonnative Processing of Verbal Morphology: In Search of Regularity

There is little agreement on the mechanisms involved in second language (L2) processing of regular and irregular inflectional morphology and on the exact role of age, amount, and type of exposure to L2 resulting in differences in L2 input and use. The article contributes to the ongoing debates by reporting the results of two experiments on Russian verb generation and recognition in a lexical de...

Symbolic rule versus analogy in the processing of complex verbal morphology

This paper will challenge the simple notion of analogy, which relies entirely on phonological associations, and the assumption that frequency effects are incompatible with symbolic rules as they are applied in research on morphological processing. It will propose and test against the experimental data the Rules and Probabilities Model of the processing of complex inflectional morphology, which ...

Changes in functional connectivity within the fronto-temporal brain network induced by regular and irregular Russian verb production

Functional connectivity between brain areas involved in the processing of complex language forms remains largely unexplored. Contributing to the debate about neural mechanisms underlying regular and irregular inflectional morphology processing in the mental lexicon, we conducted an fMRI experiment in which participants generated forms from different types of Russian verbs and nouns as well as f...
